Avoiding Burnout as a Social Entrepreneur

Jumping into the world of freelance, business, and entrepreneurship, especially when new, can be a huge challenge. You’re reading, researching, and trying to wrap your mind around just about everything you can in the world of your industry and how to serve others.

If you’re as passionate as I am about the things you find important (i.e. social change and awareness), it’s easy to get caught up in applying yourself to every aspect of your business, ensuring its success and defining your change in the community. That being said, we’ve been taught that hard work equals success. That if you want to run a entrepreneurial operation, you must work overtime to make it happen or else you won’t succeed. It’s a trap we’ve been told is the “only way.”

I’ve found it all too easy to lose track of time, forgetting to eat, forgetting to socialize, and heck- forgetting to get up and move at all! It’s damage that you only see months down the road once it’s already present in your life. I’ve gained weight, became an introvert, and allowed so many other things to control my life because I wanted to work so hard for it. I wanted to make sure I could make a difference in every way possible.

So if this is your story, now is the time to wake up. I know because it’s mine. Your mental and physical health is so crucial to fueling your energy and your passion. So don’t miss out on gatherings with friends, family, and others just because you’re too busy “staying busy”. In the long run, you’ll only regret the relationships you failed to keep and the body that you once were proud of.

So, all being said, in an age of Coronavirus, take time to stop and smell the roses. It’s summer. It’s time to rest and reflect. Time to find inspiration again and come back to the things you love. Because your work will always be there and no matter how you choose to use your time, you’ll be making a change.
